Dash Cam: Mio MiVue 508

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Dash Cam, or actually my father bought it for me. I didn’t specifically look for it, or did any research what is the best camera or anything like that. Special Offer in the Netherlands “Mio MiVue 508 for 69€”. So, I thought, what the hec, why not? Check a bit on internet and seem to have fairly decent specs and reviews, so I took one.

So how did it go so far?

Installing the Dash. Put in the memory car – easy-. Plug in the USB, power it up and it works. So damn easy!

Then I get into my car (VW Passat), and here we have the first problem! Where to put it? You cannot mount it to the dashboard! With the car mount you cannot put it to the Dashboard and aim it at the road. A) it is upside down and you cannot turn it, B) you can not aim it at the road, the angle simply doesn’t reach it!

So, you need to fix it to the window. So, lets call it a “Windshield Cam” instead from now on. But where to put it? The optimal place where to put it, it really sits right in the middle of your windscreen, and it obstructs your view quite considerably.  So, lets hide it in a corner, well that doesn’t allow a good view of the road, so no use. Lets put it behind the Mirror! Yes, that works fine.. Oh, crap, there are sensors in the mirror obstructed now, so no good after all. I finally found a compromise partially behind the mirror and taking a small piece out of the driver’s viewing area.

Ok, that works fine.. Now the powering up. There is a nice long cable 1.8 Meter with cigarette plug. BUT, now I have a cable hanging down my mirror and a large ball of string lying in my ashtray… not good either. I think I need to search on internet how people solve this problem…

Overall definitely value for money!!
